Maramataka Scratch Project (Exstension)

Last term Mrs Burton Extension class had worked on a Maramataka (Maori luna calendar)This week I have now completed a scratch projects that shows and tells you all about the Maramataka and the different ways it can be shown as.Each segment can move around in many different ways.It took me a vey long time to get this finished but the One person that helped me get through was Mrs Burton she helped me learn different things each class we had even though she was helping others she always made time to help me with my project. The hardest step of this project was the segments had to measure each segment and make sure they match up correctly so I was able to make a circle and-make the segments move. Now that I have finished I would love to show you my finished result.

Animation – Photopia (Choclate Melting)

This term we have been learning about the changing states of matter. Our theme is Changes Matter and we have been looking at solids, liquids and gases.
This term my photopea animation will be about chocolate melting to show how a Solid changes to a Liquid. My animation will show you a block of chocolate melting into a liquid and steam forming.
For my backdrop I have drawn an ordinary kitchen with a lot of detail including a fridge, oven, and windows.
When a liquid changes into a solid the molecules have less movement and become packed closer together. For example when I melt something the molecules move around and when I freeze something the molecules move slower because it is so hard.

Mars – Our New home?

Mars –

Our New Home?

Think carefully about each question, and use evidence from the texts to support your conclusions. Write your answers in full sentences, and use explanations and examples where needed.

Surface Level: Find the Answer in the Text

  1. What are some similarities between Earth and Mars?

Both have valleys and mountains, weather and seasons, and volcanoes and ice caps.

  1. Humans would find it challenging to live on Mars without what?

Humans would find it challenging to live on mars without Water,Food,Oxygen.

  1. What are the 3 things that the article says are making our planet Earth unlivable?

Pollution, climate change, over use of natural uses.

Inference: Use Clues from the Text to Think of an Answer

  1. Explain in your own words why scientists are exploring the possibility of a move to Mars?

Mars is kind of like earth so when the world ends everyone will be evacuated to Mars.

  1. What are some challenges that humans would face if there was a move to Mars?

Being able to breath Not being able to have water or food.

  1. Why do you think plants will be so important to the terraforming of Mars?

Because plants need water and in Mars there are no sign of water on that planet.

Unfamiliar Words: Clarifying Language that may cause Misunderstanding

Word Sentence from the text Definition
Enthusiast Earth, has captured the imagination of scientists and space enthusiasts alike A person who is very interested in a particular activity or subject.
Potential Mars holds the potential for us to explore and perhaps even call it our new home someday.  Having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future.
Abundant While Earth is beautiful and abundant, we must face the reality that our actions are harming our planet. Pollution,  Existing or available in large quantities; plentiful.
Generate create sustainable habitats, and generate the resources necessary for survival. To produce or create something New.

Global Inferencing: Making Connections between the Text and the Wider World

Would you want to be one of the first people living on Mars?

Come up with solid reasons for your choice, and provide evidence, and examples to support your reasons.

I do want to be one of the first people on Mars because I might discover something new and find species of different things. But the hardest challenging moment would be when I run out of water and food or when I just can’t breathe.DID YOU KNOW that it takes 7 months just to get to mars and it is the fourth planet from the sun so the average distance is about 228 kilometres which is 142 million miles.FUN FACT:The difference between mars and earth is Mars doesn’t rain,It just so seems that Mars does not drop a single droplet of rain.

Climate change (Planing & Explanitory Writing)

Climate Change – The Biggest Challenge

We have spent the last week learning about Climate Change and the impact that it has on life on Earth. For this week’s writing task we are going to be explaining what Climate Change is, what impact it has, and what we need to do to improve how we look after the environment.

Make sure you have read and understood what Explanatory Writing is, and have made a plan.

Your task is to explain

what Climate Change is, and what impact it has on Earth.

Begin your writing here:

Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. Climate impacts are already harming health, through air pollution, disease, extreme weather events, forced displacement, pressures on mental health, and increased hunger and poor nutrition in places where people cannot grow or find sufficient food.

Climate change is very dangerous to our environment and can have a really bad impact on our health and bodies.Climate change is really just all about the temperature or is it?Many people think climate change mainly means warmer temperatures. But temperature rise is only the beginning of the story. Because the Earth is a system, where everything is connected, changes in one area can influence changes in all others.Climate change can affect our health, ability to grow food, housing, safety and work.

The main greenhouse gases that are causing climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. These come from using gasoline for driving a car or coal for heating a building, for example. Clearing land and cutting down forests can also release carbon dioxide. Agriculture, oil and gas operations are major sources of methane emissions. Energy, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and land use are among the main sectors causing greenhouse gases.Climate scientists have shown that humans are responsible for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years.

Many climate change solutions can deliver economic benefits while improving our lives and protecting the environment. We also have global frameworks and agreements to guide progress, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Three broad categories of action are: cutting emissions, adapting to climate impacts and financing required adjustments. Many climate change solutions can deliver economic benefits while improving our lives and protecting the environment.

Climate is the average weather in a place over many years. Climate change is a shift in those average conditions. The rapid climate change we are now seeing is caused by humans using oil, gas and coal for their homes, factories and transport. When these fossil fuels burn, they release greenhouse gases – mostly carbon dioxide (CO2). These gases trap the Sun’s heat and cause the planet’s temperature to rise.Linking climate change and individual droughts can be difficult.

Climate Change – Responce to text

Climate Change – Response to Texts

Think carefully about each question, and use evidence from the texts to support your conclusions. Write your answers in full sentences, and use explanations and examples where needed.

  1. What are two of the largest sources of climate change? Explain what they are.

Source One:Fossil fuels Fossil fuels represent 3 meanings: Coal, oil, and gas.
Source Two:Electricity  Electricity power generates shares the second largest greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. Explain what impact climate change is having on our environment. Include at least 2 examples.

As global temperatures climb, widespread shifts in weather systems occur, making events like droughts, hurricanes, and floods more intense and unpredictable.

  1. What are greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse gases (also known as GHGs) are gases in the earth’s atmosphere that trap heat.

  1. How does deforestation contribute to climate change?

Much of the carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change.

  1. Why is it important to reduce our carbon footprint?

Reducing your carbon footprint is important because it mitigates the effects of global climate change, improves public health, boosts the global economy, and maintains biodiversity.

  1. Do you think we, as New Zealanders, are doing a good job of slowing down climate change? Provide at least 2 reasons for your answer.
We’re supporting businesses to cut their carbon emissions. We are also helping to reduce their impact in areas like agriculture, forests and water.
